Have you been watching the Olympics? We love the Olympics when they come around every two years. Whether they are Summer or Winter, we get totally into it. Watching the Winter Olympics this year in Pyeongchang, South Korea has had me thinking about the similarities between Olympians and entrepreneurs. I wanted to highlight some of the similarities between the two so that you can run your business like an Olympian. Here’s how:
Run Your Business like an OlympianFebruary 17, 2018
Olympians don’t just hit the gym with no plan in mind. They know what they want and they develop a detailed plan on how to get there. Everything they do in their training is completely intentional. Do the same with your business. Decide what you want to achieve in your business and set a plan for how you will get there. Don’t go into each week and each day just thinking that you have a lot of things to do, put together a to-do list and prioritize your acitivies, delegate where you can and decide what is truly the most important to get you where you want to be. Always be intentional in your business.
If you’ve been watching the winter Olympics at all you have seen some intense falls and crashes in almost every sport. You may also have heard some of the inspiring stories about athletes who had terrible accidents and injuries only to train and come back even stronger than before, with even more drive. We can all learn from these athletes because they never give up. They all make mistakes but they take them, learn from them, and improve from them. The next time you hit a road bump or your plans don’t work out as you hoped they would, don’t give up or back down. Hustle like an Olympian and come back better than ever before!
Olympic athletes aren’t embarrassed to admit they can be single minded. They’re all there for one thing, to go for the gold. They all want to win and win big. There is no reason you shouldn’t run your business the same way! Figure out what your Gold Medal Goal is and aim for that. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to set a seemingly impossible goal. If you work hard and put in the time, whether you end up winning the gold or not, you will have gained valuable experience along the way.
Many athletes know that there is always someone faster or stronger waiting to rise up in the ranks. So, many times they focus more on themselves than on their competitors. By competing against yourself you put the focus on your own improvement. if you are always trying to improve your own performance, you’ll know that you are always doing YOUR best. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses, so instead of comparing your weaknesses to someone else’s strengths and putting yourself down, compare yourself to you. Always try to beat your best performance and be better than yourself. That way, you’re guaranteed to improve.
Olympians don’t get to stand up on that medal podium without the help from other people. No one expects an athlete to get the gold medal without a coach and support so why would you expect yourself to reach all of your goals without help? Whether it’s getting a professional coach, a virtual assistant, or outsourcing some of the work you don’t enjoy or you’re not good at, it’s important to recognize when you need help in order to achieve your goals. Identify your weak spots and figure out how what help looks like for you!
